James Cagney Weekend

April 25, 2021 By Library Staff

Cagney’s film “THE ROARING TWENTIES” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. on the lawn at the Rec Park on the rain date, July 24.

Save the dates and celebrate James Cagney’s birthday! Movie star James Cagney lived in Stanfordville for 31 years. To celebrate his life, the Stanford Special Events Committee, in concert with Stanford Grange #808, the Stanford Free Library and StanfordRec, has organized Cagney-centric activities to take place July 16 – 17. Here’s the rundown:

On Friday, July 16 film historian Sybil DelGaudio will give a talk on Cagney’s career at the Stanford Free Library at 7:00 p.m. (registration required due to room capacity). To register for the talk, contact the library at stanfordlibrary@optonline.netor call 845-868-1341.

The library’s book club has chosen Cagney’s biography, “Cagney” by John McCabe, for the club’s monthly discussion, which will be held July 12at 4:00 p.m. This will be a hybrid meeting, meaning you can attend in person or virtually.  To register for the book club meeting, contact the library (details in paragraph above). The library will give away a copy of the book in a raffle. You can enter the raffle at the library for free. There is also a board in the library where Cagney memories may be written and posted. There are all kinds of reasons to drop by the library!

On Saturday July 17 (rain date July 24), Cagney’s film “THE ROARING TWENTIES” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. on the lawn at the Rec Park. On July 17only (not on July 24), picnic dinners can be picked up at the Grange at 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m., your choice. To arrange for picnic dinners from the Grange, telephone Ryan Orton at 845-868-7869. The picnic menu is sausage & pepper sandwiches, macaroni salad, corn on the cob, and a black & white cookie for dessert. Cost is $15 per dinner.

The Grange will offer picnic dinners on July 17, rain or shine. The Grange will also provide free snacks for the movie – chips, trail mix, popcorn, maybe homemade baked goods – and moviegoers can chip in with contributions to support this community service if they wish.
